As well to our top performers, there were plenty of players having a tremendous performance at the NY2LA Final Chapter. Here are a few additional standouts from Sunday.
Caleb Atewe – 2022 – PF – Northern Kings
One of a few big men on this team out of Canada that was a contributor and showed plenty of upside. Atewe has good size at 6’9” with a strong build as well to playing with great energy. He is a force inside grabbing all boards near him, being a rim projector, and battling for position inside. He scores the ball strong inside as well as in transition running the floor hard at all times.
Garwey Dual – 2023 – G – George Hill All Indy
Dual continues to show he is one of the top two guards in the entire nation. He was flashing his ability to score the ball from all three levels. The Providence commit was hitting his shots well pulling up in the mid-range as well as from beyond the arc, using his length to his shots right over defenders. With his size, quickness, and energy, Dual has all the tools of a high-level defender.
Zack Hawkinson – 2023 – SF – MidPro Academy
While he may not get the same attention of some of his MidPro teammates, Hawkinson was a huge piece of this teams run to a title at the Final Chapter. Whatever MidPro needed, he got it done playing his role to perfection. He is a standout in the defensive end with all his physical tools in addition to getting some key buckets between the semifinals and championship game hitting some spot up threes and finishing all around the paint. Hawkinson has continued to earn himself a few division two offers this summer.
Gehrig Normand – 2023 – SG – 3D Hoops
Normand has continued to show he is one of the top scorers in the entire nation for the 2023 class. He shoots it at a level from the outside, can create his own shot, and gets to the bucket and finishes big above the rim. Normand showed off his scoring ability on Sunday with an efficient 19-point performance doing most his damage from beyond the arc plus had a 29 point game earlier in the tournament. He has continued to reel in the offers including Auburn, Illinois, and Oklahoma State this summer.
Matt Schmainda – 2023 – G – Wisconsin Swing
The always consistent Schmainda has just continued to contribute over the past two years on the association. This was more than the case during the Final Chapter as the guard was a big piece of the Swings run all the way to the 17U platinum championship game. He scored 19 points in the quarterfinals in a big win over George Hill All Indy and then was a stat stuffer in the semifinals and championship game. Whether it be knocking down threes, running the point and facilitating, playing tough perimeter defense, or even using his strength to post up, he is always making plays.
Mantas Zilys – 2023 – G – Young & Reckless
A big stock booster from the Final Chapter tournament. Zilys is a bouncy wing guard who can do so much on the floor and knows how to play. A tough and high energy defender that can matchup with both guards and wings well. Not only did he shoot it well spotting up from the outside with range but goes hard to the bucket and finishes strong. He was a key piece of his team championship and should be on scholarship coaches’ radars.
